The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), North Central Zone, warmly congratulates Comr. Lukman Lawal Orbana on his emergence as the newly elected Secretary General of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) at the just-concluded National Convention held in Abuja.
Some victories are celebrated because an individual has won an election. Others are celebrated because they represent the beginning of something bigger. For the North Central Zone, the emergence of Comr. Lukman Lawal Orbana falls firmly into the latter category.
His election as Secretary General is a recognition of his capacity, experience, dedication and understanding of the responsibilities that come with national student leadership. It is also an opportunity for him to contribute his energy and institutional experience to the continued growth, stability and effectiveness of NAPS at a time when the Association is entering a new phase of national leadership.
The office of Secretary General is one of the most important administrative positions within any national organization. It is the engine room through which communication, documentation, coordination and institutional continuity are sustained. For an organization as diverse and nationally structured as NAPS, the effectiveness of its Secretary General can significantly influence how efficiently the different organs, zones, states and institutional chapters work together.
This is why the North Central Zone considers Comr. Lukman Lawal Orbana’s emergence not simply as a personal achievement, but as a responsibility entrusted to a leader who must now help connect the many moving parts of the national association.
His new office will require more than administrative competence. It will demand accessibility, organization, diplomacy, patience and an unwavering commitment to the interests of the students NAPS represents. The Secretary General must be able to listen to the concerns of different structures, coordinate effectively with national officers, maintain institutional records, facilitate communication and ensure that decisions taken at the national level are properly communicated and implemented.
These responsibilities become even more important as NAPS continues to evolve into a more structured and influential student organization. The modern NAPS must be capable of communicating effectively across hundreds of institutions, responding promptly to emerging issues, maintaining institutional memory and ensuring that its programmes and decisions reach the students they are designed to serve.
Comr. Orbana now has an opportunity to play a central role in that transformation.
His emergence also represents another significant moment for the North Central Zone. The region has continued to demonstrate that its contribution to NAPS extends beyond geographical representation. Through its leaders, consultations, advocacy and participation in national affairs, North Central has remained an important voice in the wider conversation about the direction of the Association.
The journey to the Abuja convention was characterized by consultations, engagements and conversations about the future of NAPS. The North Central leadership approached the process with the understanding that leadership selection should ultimately be about identifying individuals capable of contributing meaningfully to the collective interests of Nigerian polytechnic students.
With the convention now concluded and a new national leadership emerging, the political chapter has given way to the service chapter.
And for Comr. Lukman Lawal Orbana, the work begins now.
There is a great deal that the Nigerian polytechnic community expects from its national leadership. Students want stronger representation. They want their concerns communicated effectively. They want an association that responds to their realities and creates opportunities beyond the traditional boundaries of student unionism.
They want leadership that understands that the challenges confronting today’s students are changing rapidly.
Digital transformation is reshaping education. Artificial intelligence is changing the workplace. Entrepreneurship is becoming increasingly important. Skills development is becoming indispensable. Students are looking beyond graduation toward employability, innovation, professional development and economic independence.
NAPS must therefore build structures capable of responding to these realities.
As Secretary General, Comr. Orbana will be uniquely positioned to contribute to the administrative foundation upon which these ambitions can be built. A strong secretariat means stronger coordination. Stronger coordination means better implementation. Better implementation means greater impact.
That is the opportunity before him.
But with opportunity comes responsibility.
The North Central Zone believes that the best leaders are not necessarily those who occupy the loudest spaces, but those who make institutions work. Between existing structures and emerging generations of student leaders.
